A Covenant Rush entails sending your Leader to an enemy base, building a bunch of Leader Units and teleporting them to your Leader, whom you should upgrade with Tech 1 abilities from your Temple. This can be defended against by a Turtle strategy but, if they are quick enough, players can launch their attack before the Turtler is ready to defend. Rushing entails building a large-population, low-upgrade army and attacking quickly. Rushing is the easiest strategy to execute. Leader Power Upgrade (both Tech 2 upgrades) Leader Power Upgrade (both Tech 1 upgrades) This strategy is a gamble however, as it relies on your ability to predict a Rush before it happens and can leave players vulnerable to Boom strategies. Turtle strategies work best with Covenant Leaders, as Covenant bases have much less HP than UNSC bases. This allows players to defend against Rushes and quickly counter-attack. Turtling players focus solely on base defense in the early game. By building Heavy Supply Pads straight away, players using rush get a supply boost early in the game, allowing them to quickly build up their bases and pump out units. Sergeant Forge is probably the easiest Leader to Boom. This, however, requires reliance on teammates and their ability to defend, as the player will have no defensive units or turrets for an extended period, making them vulnerable to a Rush. This allows the player to unleash a fully upgraded army during mid-game and essentially steamroll the map. Players using the Boom strategy will focus solely on upgrading a main unit and a support unit through early and part of mid-game, depending on their build order. In doing so, you'll always have an backup to come back to if you mess things up. Whenever you're ahead in a game - supplies, units, just broke an enemy base - save the game. There is a save function in the Campaign's start menu. They may add a minute or two to your strategy build, but they can be a game changer, especially if you upgrade them to counter your enemy. No matter what strategy you're using, you can always build turrets. This grants attack and defence bonuses, so keep those units alive! In order to do so, UNSC Leaders have a Healing Leader Power and Covenant Leaders have Engineers that can be built via the Summit.
Units accumulate Veterancy (denoted by stars next to their health bar for a total of three) the more units they kill. Plan your strategies according to what you need to counter. Halo Wars works on a Rock-Paper-Scissors scheme Infantry beats Air, Air beats Vehicles, Vehicles beat Infantry. They provide choke-points to stop the advance of enemy units and can grant you extra Supplies, +1 Tech Level or +10 Population.
If you're building Infantry as your main unit, make sure to garrison available buildings. No sense in letting the Supplies fuel the enemy's war effort. If there are intact Rebel bases and you have units capable of destroying them and collecting the Supply Crates, do it. Make use of it whenever possible, especially with Marines, Scorpions and Wolverines. Most units have a secondary ability, activated by the 'Y' button. Unless you're using a Forge Boom, this is the easiest way to ensure a decent Supply income and unlock unit upgrades early-game. When building bases, remember this simple rule: Supply, Reactor, Supply. While you're there, steal any Supply Crates your opponents didn't claim. In addition to collecting Supply Crates, use your scout to do a drive-by of enemy bases, which can reveal their strategies based on their build orders, allowing you to plan ahead. Queue your first Supply Pad and then have the scout collect Supply Crates from the field for an early boost. You will always start the game with a scout (Warthog, Ghost or Chopper, depending on your Leader).
